Comrades
Ethembeni School is situated on the route of the Comrades Marathon, the biggest ultra marathon in South Africa (90 kms /56 miles). Approximately 13,000 runners from South Africa and abroad compete. During the event, our students line the road on crutches and in wheelchairs, cheering the runners on, while singing, dancing and playing traditional musical instruments.

At the Comrades Expo, Ethembeni markets and fundraises for the school with Medicross Hospitals as its sponsor. In addition, for 16 years the Rocky Road Runners Club, a Comrades participant, has donated wheelchairs, sports equipment, and funds to Ethembeni.

NYC Marathon
Every year since receiving an invitation from the NY Achilles Track Club in 1999, Ethembeni has sent disabled student runners to run the New York City Marathon. Traveling and meeting New Yorkers is both a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the students and a fundraising opportunity for Ethembeni.

Ethembeni School has since helped establish the South African Achilles chapter and has assisted other disabled runners from Cape Town, Soweto, Botswana and Namibia to participate in this world-class event.

Greece - Olympeace Project
Pupils from Ethembeni participated in “Children Festival Ekecheiria - Olympeace” held in Greece in 2001 and 2003. The Ethembeni team joined children from countries in conflict (Albania, Cyprus, Israel, Palestine, Russia, Serbia), who came together for a week to celebrate universal humanistic principles and build world peace.

In 2001 Ethembeni sent disabled Zulu runners to run a four-day relay of from Olympia to Delfi, spreading the message of peace and showing other children that even with disabilities, a person can overcome major obstacles. In 2003 disabled Zulu runners covered a distance of 230 kms/144 miles together with a group of partially-sighted and blind runners from Israel.
