EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES
Students accepted to the school include the physically disabled, visually impaired,
and physically and/or visually impaired with mild to moderate intellectually impairment.
Students must be no more than 3 years behind in their schooling; they must be
educable and trainable.
The
Ethembeni School provides its students with academically progressive phases of
education, as well as remediation and skills building. We respond to individual
needs, aiding each student to work through challenges and reach his/her intellectual
and functional potential.
Foundation Phase: Grades 1-3
Intermediate Phase: Grades 4-6
Secondary Phase: Grades 7-9
Remedial: Students who display severe cognitive and learning limitations
enter the Remedial programme. Emphasis is placed on self-care, functional communication,
and social skills with a goal to advance to the Pre-Skills Class.
Pre-Skills: Students between 10 and 13 years of age, at a minimum of Grade
4 level, who are no longer able to achieve academic success in the Foundation
Intermediate, or Secondary Phases enter the Pre-Skills programme. The emphasis
in Pre-Skills in on basic literacy and knowledge of arithmetic, the use of tools
and equipment, and following 5+ step instructions.
In Pre-Skills, the children:
· Learn to act independently and responsibly
· Develop self-confidence and self-respect
· Assume a positive attitude toward neatness, punctuality, and duty
· Expand their vocabulary
· Understand the meaning of cause and effect
· Develop a sense of working processes
