Many of the children at the Ethembeni school are both physically disabled and economically disadvantaged. Typically the physically disabled in traditional African society, and particularly those without an education, are marginalised and some become beggars. If this were not enough, many children have lost parents to the scourge of AIDS.
Due to huge cutbacks in government subsidies, the school is finding it increasingly difficult to meet the needs of these children. Ethembeni has established the Adopt a Child program in order to fill the critical budget gap, so as to ensure that these children become independent and contributing members of society.
Adopting a child is a practical and immediate way to affect a child’s life. Your donation of $1000 provides one child with a year’s education, room and board, medical equipment, books and supplies.
How does it work?
Ethembeni matches you, the donor, with a needy child. You are provided with information about the child, his/her photo, and bi-annual reports (if requested) about the child’s development. When Ethembeni has sufficient funds to set up a proper computer system, a penpal email relationship can be established between the child and the donor parent.
